Presentation of research results obtained during the project at a conference in Funchal, Portugal

On October 30-31, 2025, project manager Professor Helena Ostrowicka and one of the project’s co-investigators, PhD Celina Czech-Włodarczyk, participated in the international conference Discourses in Interaction III, Representations of Memories and Identities: Linguistics, Arts and Cultures in the Spotlight. The conference took place in Funchal, at the University of Madeira. The researchers presented a paper entitled “Heterotopias of Eternity and Festival as Memory Practices in the Discourses of Selected Youth Organizations Acting in Poland,” which was part of the conference’s reflections on discourses that reveal the relationship between the past and the present in contemporary global society. Drawing on Michel Foucault’s concept of heterotopia, the researchers presented examples of heterotopias of eternity and sacredness in the youth discourses and memory practices of six selected youth organizations operating in Poland. In their presentation, the researchers emphasized that, on the one hand, organizations capture the fleeting moment associated with a specific, often special, and spontaneous celebration. On the other hand, they perpetuate the memory of historical events that are particularly important to them. Posting information about anniversaries on Facebook is part of a memory practice that results in the endless accumulation of time in the online space. After their presentation, the researchers answered questions from the audience and participated in engaging discussions behind the scenes.
