Popularization of the project at an international conference in Istanbul

On June 12-14, 2025, the project manager, prof. dr hab. Helena Ostrowicka and one of the project implementers, dr Celina Czech-Włodarczyk, took part in the 26th annual international conference of the scientific society CiCea entitled: “Education and Communication: Being & Becoming Citizens in An Interconnected World”, held in Istanbul, Turkey, and organized in cooperation with the Children’s Identity & Citizenship European Association and Istanbul University, especially the Faculty of Communication. The researchers jointly presented a paper entitled “Discourse studies in research on citizenship”, which was met with interest from the conference participants. In the paper, discourse studies were presented as a research approach based on the (re)construction of meanings, which takes into account three elements: language, context, and social practice. Depending on the subject and purpose of the research, different perspectives and methods can be used. The most popular ones include: critical discourse analysis, interpretive, post-foundational, rhetorical, post-colonial, feminist, and post-Foucauldian perspectives. In the paper, discourse studies were presented using the example of citizenship research. An example of research from the “Heterotopias of Citizenship” project was cited, as well as research by other authors, thus showing the possibilities of applying selected concepts and methods of discourse analysis. In the paper, the researchers emphasized that in citizenship research using discourse analysis, it is important to understand how language shapes the concept of citizenship, social identities, and power relations. By adopting a discursive perspective, we can reconstruct civic practices and definitions of citizenship in various social, political, and cultural contexts.
